John Oswald has made some really wild collage music.  Here is the allmusic review of this album.  Here is the emusic entry, which is interesting because of the artist listings for the tracks.  This is the track entitled ‘power’.

From Wikipedia:

“His 1975 track “Power” married frenetic Led Zeppelin guitars to the impassioned exhortations of a Southern US evangelist years before hip hop discovered the potency of the same (and related) ingredients.”

I like this particular track loud.

Bring on the RIAA

mash-up or mash·up   (mash’up’)

n.   An audio recording that is a composite of samples from other recordings, usually from different musical styles.

The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition

Re-use of other people’s work is nothing new in modern music. Musicians have been singing each others’ songs for as long as they’ve been singing their own. And sampling and remixing took off with the advent of magnetic tape recording 50 years ago. As my mom says, imitation is high flattery.

In the last decade, digital music has enabled the new wave of re-use and re-imagination: the mashup.  At worst, a mashup is a worthless rip-off of what may otherwise be great music. At best, it’s a sublime creation that is all its own.

Sadly, while the paradigm has changed, the rules have stayed the same, making most mashups illegal.  Let’s show our love for the RIAA by sharing our favorite (illegal) mashups.

Party Ben - Paid for my Doorbell

Cover Art for Best of Bootie 2005One of the first mashup series I ever heard was Best of Bootie, and this is the first track from the first release, way back in 2005. It is billed as Eric B. & Rakim + The White Stripes, but there’s definitely some other stuff going on in there too.

The Best of Bootie 2006 and 2007 compilations have gotten a little more sophisticated and the mashups a little more skillful, but for pure guilty pleasure party music, 2005 is the one for me.

Nelly Furtado vs. Asha Bhonsle - I’m Like a Bird (Digital Cutup Lounge Remix)

Take two songs I don’t particularly care for, by artists I don’t usually listen to, and mash them together with a pinch of fiendish cleverness. The result? A track that I love. Weird, right?

That Handsome Devil - Hey White Boy

I’m not going to tell you what gets mashed up here, just know that my inner child is now curled up in a corner, rocking gently back and forth and shuddering.

Blame the excellent Fong Songs blog for what you are about to receive.

T. Pain vs. Cloud Cult - Collide You a Drank (ABX)

Cloud Cult + T. Pain = joy

This mashup of Cloud Cult’s dreamy Chemicals Collide and T.Pain’s club banger Buy You a Drank is everything a mashup should be: weird, irresistable, and entirely original. Check out the original tracks.

MP3: Cloud Cult - Chemicals Collide
MP3: T.Pain - Buy You a Drank

Thanks to All Things Go for the heads up on this great f*ck-you to the RIAA.

Immuzikation - Fish Tacos

Coldplay - Viva La Vida + Weezer - The Greatest Man That Ever Lived + Cut Copy - Far Away + The Blow - Parentheses + M.I.A. - Boyz + Reading Rainbow

Sick!  I can’t believe how seemlessly these samples transition and overlay.

(Thanks again to All Things Go!  Love those guys.)

Krazydad - Dark Side of the Whip

I will simply quote this mashup’s creator:

It suddenly occured to me as I was driving to work yesterday that the songs “Crack that Whip” by Devo, and “Breathe” by Pink Floyd are oddly similar (did I mention it’s a loooong drive?)

It is genuinely bizarre how smoothly the songs fit together. Plus I now have to go try to sync Devo albums with The Wizard of Oz.

Thanks to thetapeleader for finding this.

nostrich:

Another year, another excellent Best of Bootie compilation. For the uninitiated: Best of Bootie is a yearly compilation of the year’s best mashups, presented in continuous mix form. You’ll probably recognise names like DJ Earworm, Divide & Kreate, and The Hood Internet, but there are plenty of lesser known gems on there too. On top of that, there are 13 bonus tracks “that didn’t quite fit” for your downloading pleasure.
And if you’re new to the Best of Bootie compilations, I suggest checking out the previous three years’ compilations too.
