On Second Thought...

Some songs or albums grab you immediately and won’t let go. I love moments like that, but they’re pretty rare for me. It usually takes a few listens for me to form a real opionion of (rather than an inarticulate feeling about) music and even then my first impression isn’t always a strong indicator for how I’ll feel after the first week or two of listening.

There are cases where my initial crush dissolves like cotton candy in a thunderstorm, and other times when I go back to an album that I couldn’t stand and can’t for the life of me figure out what I disliked about it.

What are your “on second thought…” tracks?

Boom Boom Satellites - Upside Down

Japan’s Boom Boom Satellites have been working the big beat for about a decade. On paper I should like big beat [“loops from jazz, rock or 60’s pop?” “crowd-inciting drum rolls?” “strong psychedelic influence stemming from the influence of Dougie Wright?” What’s not to like?] but I usually don’t.

This track seemed par for the course: it wasn’t bad, exactly, but then I would start flashing back to my few, ill-conceived visits to the kinds of clubs that played house music in the ’80s and that was that. Skip.

In the last couple of weeks, though, the shuffle play gnomes started bringing it back into circulation, and…I like it. I had to fight the urge to skip at first, but this is actually a really powerful track. I’m not certain how it’ll go, but I’ll be digging into the Boom Boom Satellites’ back catalogue soon. Further bulletins as events warrant.

The Psychic Paramount - Echoh Air

Admittedly this is just a huge guitar solo with lots of distortion and a killer rhythm section, but it rocks.  hard.  relentlessly.  beautifully.

The first time I listened to this album I thought the simplicity of the concept was a flaw.  I have come to think the opposite.  Who can’t use some heavily distorted rocking guitar solos every now and again?

Gomez - Las Vegas Dealer

Gomez has gotten a fair amount of blog love for their just-released album, and rightly so: they’re a good band. They’re also a band that I spent much of the last dozen years completely ignoring.  I honestly don’t know why, in retrospect, there was just something that bugged me about their music.

Then a year or two ago a friend passed me a mix that had Las Vegas Dealer on it. The song absolutely grabbed me and so I started digging back into their albums…and was totally unable to remember why I didn’t listen to them. Give this track a try and see whether you want to hear more — I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
