You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension—a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You’re moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas.

theMusic checklist:

  • Sound? Check. Sounds piled in every corner of theMusic’s luxurious offices.
  • Mind? Check. Insightful commentary aplenty offered.
  • Sight? Read on…

While purists may complain that the shrinking canvas offered to designers by CDs—to say nothing of the (shudder) disassociation of sight and sound that came with downloadable music—have reduced album cover design to a sad state, it’s not dead yet.

Covers that are classics of design*, covers that are perfect for the album inside, or covers that are perfect despite the album inside: just bring on the stylish jackets.

* Yeah, yeah, we’ve all got a copy of Sticky Fingers—you’ve got to try harder than that, guys.

Donald Byrd Band & Voices - A New Perspective
Gee, do you think this album was released in, say, the early ’60s? By a jazz performer on Blue Note, perhaps? The album itself is outstanding, but the cover is something else again. Hip, baby. Cooool.

The Twilight Sad album/EP covers
I can’t say that I like The Twilight Sad, exactly; the offputting creepiness that you see here definitely comes through in their music, and if I listen for too long I end up with the irrational fear that James Graham is going to appear next to me and want to talk about his childhood.
That said, I love their covers. They’re distinctive, they fit the music perfectly, and they’re beautiful in their own, disturbed way.
You can listen to The Twilight Sad on the Hype Machine, of course.

I’ve got to reblog it: the cover is perfect for their sound, and I love the moment described below…
via machinetext:
Flying Saucer Attack - self titled. Love love love flying saucer attack and their blissed out wash of distortion and hazy vocals. The cover is as good a visual summation or analogue of their sound as I can imagine. This is my favorite album to fall asleep to on a long flight - it instantly removes me from the awful confines of the cabin and reminds me that I’m flying through the night sky. I once woke on a cross-country flight, it was late, the track “Popul Vuh 1” was playing and we were flying over Chicago on a slightly hazy night. The city’s grid was visible and watching it slowly move by in my half-awake state with my head filled with FSA was cinematic, memorable, incredible; a perfect moment.

Mike & Rich - Expert Knob Twiddlers
Richard James (Aphex Twin) and Mike Paradinas (µ-ziq) teamed up for this album, whose’s cover is a parody of an old Milton Bradley board game.

“Cleverly maneuver your records onto the platters and then listen to the tracks in the right order to win! But watch out-the tracks are different on each side. You could be helping your opponent instead of helping yourself!”

Gong - Acid Motherhood
creepy.  I love the way it spoofs their collaborators here, namely Acid Mothers Temple.

The very first album jacket, and not bad looking at all for a first try! Click through the link for some great history, too (via artistspaid):

The World’s First Album Cover - Alex Steinweiss’ Greatest Hit

Before the LP (Long Playing) record, 78 records were usually 10 inch platters that held around 3 minutes of music!
